Scammers are using a fake jury duty scheme to steal money from residents of Massachusetts. In both instances, the scammers asked the victims to deposit money into bitcoin ATMs, according to a report by Decrypt.
The two victims lost nearly $7,000 to the scam, which asked for money for alleged missed jury duty appearances. The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office is calling residents to warn about the scam.
"Just hang up on anyone who is demanding money and acting like they are from our office, or another law enforcement agency, threatening you with arrest or detainment for things like 'missed jury duty' or an 'outstanding warrant,'" Sheriff Patrick McDermott said in a statement.
Bitcoin ATM scams remain a growing problem, with nearly $247 million lost in 2024. In response, there has been calls to regulate or ban bitcoin ATMs, while some operators in the industry work to limit scam, such asBitcoin Depot's ID verification system.
