JBM intros security devices for Windows-based ATMs

December 18, 2003

ST LOUIS, Mo. - JBM Electronics, a provider of financial transaction solutions, is introducing two new members to its Gateway product line, the Gateway 300 and 400. Designed for the ATM and point-of-sale markets, the G300 and G400 offer enhanced Virtual Private Network (VPN) and firewall capabilities for Windows-based terminals.

The announcement is timely, in light of the recent revelation that at least some Windows-based ATMs had been impacted by computer worms or viruses. While the Windows operating system offers manufacturers increased flexibility and reduces their development costs, it can present increased security risks for ATM deployers, according to a news release.

JBM's Linux-based Gateways offer IT managers a low-cost method of protecting their terminals, according to the release. The hardware-based Gateways provide a VPN client, Triple DES encryption, SSL client, transparent bridging, in-line intrusion protection, network address translation (NAT), stateful inspection and a flexible firewall.

They are standard-based and are compatible with any industry standard based VPN router or server.

In addition to the firewall and other security features provided by the Gateways, the Linux operating system adds an additional layer of protection, according to the release. The introduction of a second, dissimilar operating system creates a heterogeneous environment, which can frustrate efforts to compromise the terminal.

Both Gateways come with two 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports and a supervisory port for configuration. The Gateways are self-contained and connect to the terminal through the Ethernet ports. Changes to the terminal's software are not required, which eliminates the requirement for re-certification of the terminal's application.

The Gateway 300 is designed for installation in the terminal and only requires an open PCI slot. The G300 is a PCI card form factor version and plugs into any PCI-based terminal. The G300 operates independently, only drawing power from the terminal.

The Gateway 400 is a self-contained unit that can be stored inside most ATM cabinets. The G400 can provide network security for an entire bank branch, store or just one terminal.
