Jamaican police investigating unauthorized ATM withdrawals

January 7, 2004

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Police in Jamaica were questioning 10 people on Jan. 7 in connection with the disappearance of nearly $400,000 from ATMs.

According to a United Press International report, the losses occurred at machines throughout the island, and affected only accounts with RBTT Bank Jamaica Ltd.

Joe Dasilva, RBTT's chief operating officer, told the Jamaica Gleaner "a glitch in the computer system" was the likely cause.

"Our audit people are investigating the matter, and we will have a better handle on it in by the end of the week," Dasilva said.

Other bank representatives said the unauthorized withdrawals were not exclusive to RBTT machines but were done at various ATMs on the island's MultiLink system.
