Criminals are increasingly targeting ATMs in Oklahoma with jackpotting attacks, a software attack where the criminal installs software that causes it to dispense money. At one location in Oklahoma City, a jackpotter was able to steal $60,000, according to a report by Oklahoma's News 4.
"They're putting a code into the ATM and they have hardware or or software malware attached to that item that causes it to dispense cash," Gary Knight of the Oklahoma City Police Department, told the news outlet.
Because the withdrawals appear genuine, banks and ATM operators often don't catch the crime until cash reconciliation.
Oklahoma City Police were able to apprehend two suspects, who are being charged with computer crimes, conspiracy, pattern of criminal offense and obtaining money by false pretenses.
