Indivos wins patent for biometric technology

December 19, 2001

OAKLAND, Calif. - Electronic identification company Indivos has been awarded a U.S. Patent for biometric technology that would allow customers to access ATMs without using plastic cards or other forms of identification tokens, the company announced in a press release.

Indivos's Pay By Touch system allows customers to use their fingerprint data for authentication purposes. When a customer's finger image is run over a touch screen, the encrypted information is sent to a secured data center, which verifies the information. Indivos officials said the service can be used at retail points of sale, at ATMs, or over the Internet.

Indivos in June reached an agreement with DigitalPersona Inc. to utilize the Pay By Touch service on DigitalPersona's credit card sensors. Indivos has not disclosed any specific plans for utilizing the service on ATMs.
