Indian cooperative bank adds ATMs at last

February 13, 2012

The Pune District Central Cooperative Bank has decided to provide ATM capabilities to its customers, said a news item at indianexpress.com. The first five kiosks will be ready by month-end. The bank has around 1 million customers in the Pune district and more than 100,000 in the city of Pune.

PDCC has 247 branches in the district including 40 in the city. It provides salary account services to a number of government offices as well as to primary and secondary school teachers and professors. Previously customers had to spend hours in line to withdraw their salary every month. All the major banks started using ATMs more than a decade ago and have now even added Internet and mobile banking services.

“We are aware that we are lagging far behind in providing these facilities but we are shortening the gap,” said PDCC chairman Digambar Durgade. “There are several issues when you run a cooperative bank.”

“Initially, the [PDCC cardholders] will only be able to use [their] card in PDCC ATM kiosks, and account holders in other banks won’t be able to use our ATMs,” said the bank’s computer officer, S. R. Patole. “But once we join the National Financial Switch, the ATM will function like any other bank.”
