ICL, an IT services and smart card systems company, has partnered with Northern Ireland-based Absec to launch ICL's SmartCity multi- application smart card system to the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Absec is a cashless payment and control systems company also based in Northern Ireland. ICL and Absec will sell SmartCity to universities, corporate campuses and other closed markets in the Irish and Scottish markets. Absec will be the first company in the UK and Ireland to distribute SmartCity within these markets. Absec plans to adapt its range of products, such as photocopier and vending machine readers to accept SmartCity's electronic purse application. It will also develop other applications suitable to the 'closed' environments, such as time and attendance monitoring through smart cards. ICL's SmartCity has been installed in over 70 sites worldwide with 1.5 million cards in use every day.
