The city council of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan unanimously passed an ordinance to regulate cryptocurrency ATMs. There are currently no crypto ATMs within the city limits, but a resident was allegedly the victim of a scam at a machine in St. Clair Shores, according to a report by Coin Telegraph.

The ordinance stipulates:

  • Crypto ATMs must register with Department of Public Safety.
  • They must have a business license.
  • They must place fraud risk warnings.
  • New users can only purchase $1,000 daily, with a $5,000 limit over 14 days.

"The idea is that someone at that point would become more familiar with the utilization of the machine," Bill Burgess, city attorney, said in the report.

Other localities have been cracking down on crypto ATM scams as well, with Spokane, Washington banning the machines outright.
