Greece bans interbank ATM withdrawals fees

The Greek government announced a ban on banking ATM withdrawal fees for bank owned ATMs that are part of the DIAS Interbanking System network. This move came after Piraeus Bank sold its 850 ATMs to Cashflex and customers started being charged fees, according to a report by Greek Reporter.

The law, which is expected to take force in August, will ban all interbank withdrawal fees and put a cap of $1.76 on transactions with third-party providers or foreign banks.

In addition, when providers work with a bank, it cannot charge extra fees, and if there is only one ATM in a community, it cannot charge any fees.

"Public services should serve, not entrap. We are taking immediate action—setting boundaries, establishing rules, and restoring balance between the market and society," Kyriakos Pierrakakis, minister of National Economy and Finance, said in the report.
