Germany has recently undergone a major surge in ATM theft, as organized criminals have robbed nearly 500 ATMs in 2022 and 414 attempts in 2020, according to a report by Yahoo News.

The criminals largely use bomb attacks to break open the ATMs and utilize a variety of people including drivers, explosive experts, logistical specialists and more, according to the report.

The German news outlet Die Welt suspects the culprits may be part of " a 700-member network of largely Moroccan-Dutch criminals."

In particular, Dutch authorities suspect this group is behind the murder of Peter de Vries, a Dutch crime reporter, according to the report.
