Gemalto, Fingerprints partner on first major order of bio sensors for dual-interface cards

February 22, 2019

Gemalto has opted to add technology from Fingerprint Cards AB to its next generation of dual interface payment cards.

According to a Fingerprints press release, Gemalto will offer its financial institution customers biometric EMV payment cards that feature the Fingerprints T-Shape sensor and license the Fingerprints biometric software platform for payments.

The initial order confirms the commitment of both companies to accelerate the deployment of biometric payment cards, the release said.

The Fingerprints T-shape module is optimized for integration into smartcards using established manufacturing processes. The module's ultra-low power consumption means that cards do not need a battery. To ensure privacy, biometric templates and image matching are conducted securely on the card, ensuring that data never leaves the consumers' control.

"This is a turning point for biometric payment cards," Thomas Rex, senior vice president of the smart card business line at Fingerprints, said in the release. "We are looking forward to seeing the first biometric cards in consumers' hands, adding much-needed strong authentication to contactless payments without impacting the user experience."
