Gasper produces white paper on ATM fraud

May 20, 2003

DAYTON, Ohio -- Gasper Corporation, a provider of self-service management software, has released a white paper on detecting ATM fraud.

In the white paper, Gasper identifies the ways ATM fraud is committed and makes suggestions for using technology to establish new ways of detecting fraud at the earliest stages of ATM compromise.

Ken Cooper, Gasper senior analyst and co-author of the white paper, said in a news release, "In the course of our research we discovered that there were a lot of articles reporting the problem, but few resources geared toward solutions. We decided we might be able to help move the thinking forward with a white paper."

According to the release, an optimized ATM management system can detect fraud at the point of compromise by recognizing patterns of alerts such as card read errors or changes in transaction patterns at the ATM. The system can then dispatch a technician or security service to access the situation. A particularly effective solution, according to the white paper, is to have the ATM management system automatically issue commands to shut down an ATM that is being compromised.

"Fraud is a bit like a disease: early detection is a major factor in halting the spread of the disease and can dramatically increase the chances of affecting a cure," said David Bringhurst, Gasper's product marketing manager and co-author of the paper.
