Freedom ATM Alliance begins operations

February 24, 2002

PITTSBURGH -- The Freedom ATM Alliance begins operations Jan. 6. Each of the 25 Pennsylvania banks in the alliance permits its ATMs to be used by customers of the other members without a surcharge.

Just over 200 ATMs in southwestern Pennsylvania are part of the alliance. In addition to the 25 banks now in the network, First Federal Savings Bank and Keystone Savings Bank will join in April, bringing the total to 27.

Tom Bailey, President of member Brentwood Savings, urged other banks to join the alliance. "Adding new members simply helps all of us; the alliance gains more ATMs and greater convenience for all of our customers, and the new member demonstrates its commitment to its customers," he said. "Now customers can get the personal service of a community bank with the convenience of a large ATM network."

Dollar Bank, the largest bank in the alliance with 58 ATMs, announced it would impose a $1 surcharge on customers of banks not in the alliance, beginning Jan. 7.
