Former Microsoft exec Maritz joins Mosaic

December 9, 2001

ROME - Paul Maritz, who retired from Microsoft Corp. in September of 2000 after 14 years with the company, has acquired an equity interest in Mosaic Software and has been named to the electronic funds transfer software company's board.

No information was given on the size of Maritz's investment or his ownership stake in Mosaic. Maritz's investment was announced by Mosaic during the European Technology Roundtable Exhibition in Rome on Oct. 8.

A native of South Africa, Maritz was group vice president for Microsoft's platforms strategy and developer group when he retired. Maritz was credited by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates with playing a key role in the development of several leading products, including Windows and Microsoft Office.

Since retiring from Microsoft, the 46-year-old Maritz has remained involved in the software industry, joining the board of management solutions company Jamcracker Inc. in March and becoming chairman of software startup Westside Corp. in May. He has also worked in the community development and environment fields in Africa.

"We are very proud that Paul has found our technology worthy of his personal investment, and are excited that he has also agreed to join our board of directors," Mosaic group chief executive officer Willem van Biljon said in a news release. "His vision, which has had a major impact on the entire IT industry, will be a huge benefit to us."

Mosaic, which has offices in the U.S., UK, South Africa and Australia, is involved in the electronic funds transfer industry in 28 countries.
