Scammers stole more than $333 million last year through crypto ATM scams, according to FBI data. This is an increase from $250 million in 2024, according to a report by ABC News.

A FBI spokesperson told ABC that this is a "clear and constant rise" in scams that is "not slowing down."

Scammers are choosing crypto ATMs as it is quick and nearly impossible to reverse transactions. As a result of these scams, multiple states, cities, and municipalities have either debated on or passed laws regulating crypto ATMs.

For example, St. Paul, Minnesota voted to ban the devices outright, whileLincoln, Nebraska requires operators to put up fraud warning signs.

In addition, Athena Bitcoin has faced growing legal woes, as the Washington, D.C. Attorney General sued the company alleging it benefited from scammers and undisclosed fees.
