Energy wise ATMs catching on in Pakistan

April 11, 2014

Like its neighbor India, Pakistan is beginning to invest in low-power ATMs that allow FIs to reach customers in remote areas where electrical service is either inconsistent or simply unavailable.

BankIslami Pakistan Ltd. has partnered with Diebold Inc. and its distributor TouchPoint Ltd. to deploy 25 Diebold 429 ATMs in Pakistan, according to a news release from Diebold.

The Diebold 429 ATM continuously monitors the power required to complete transactions and automatically alternates between three possible power sources: solar panel, alternating current grid and internal battery.

The machine operates on as little as 70 watts of power, and switches seamlessly between sources to maximize uptime, reduce energy consumption and lower total cost of ownership, Diebold said. The terminal does not exceed 100 watts of power usage and consumes up to 40 percent less energy than other models.

"With their unique power management system, Diebold's 429 ATMs will enable BankIslami to deliver consistent self-service access to its customers," said TouchPoint CEO Tabish Sabah.

From headquarters in Karachi, BankIslami operates more than 200 branches in 77 cities throughout Pakistan. Recent self-service channel expansions have made its ATM fleet the fastest expanding network in the country, the release said.
