EMV 'go live' guide offers links, advice for ATM deployers

October 11, 2016

ATM operators struggling to get through EMV migration now have a little extra help, thanks to "Go Live with EMV at the ATM," a free infographic from ATMequipment.com.

"The new checklist can help guide U.S. ATM owners and operators through the steps of EMV implementation by providing a simple reference point for up-to-date and detailed information for each step in the process," said Spencer Matthews, executive vice president of ATMequipment.com.

The guide includes instructions on how to turn on EMV functionality at the ATM, and includes:

  • a link to the latest software upgrades;
  • reasons to consider upgrading internet connectivity;
  • links to manufacturer-provided screenshots and videos demonstrating how to turn on EMV and load U.S. common application identifiers for each manufacturer's software;
  • information about the importance of transaction testing to ensure proper EMV functionality at each ATM;
  • the need for appropriate signage to let consumers know the machine is EMV compliant and inform staff on site that the ATM has been upgraded; and
  • a link to a white paper that explains why it's critical for merchants to upgrade their ATMs to EMV. "[T]heir financials will be thoroughly scrutinized by sponsor bank and ATM deployers to make sure they are able to survive a significant fraud loss," said David Tente, U.S. Director for the ATM Industry Association.

The first major ATM liability shift — for MasterCard — takes effect Oct. 21.
