East African nations integrate switches for ATM interoperability

Kenswitch, the national shared payments system of Kenya, has integrated its ATM system with the switches of three other East African nations.

Kenswitch, the national shared payments system of Kenya, has integrated with the ATM switches of Rwanda (R-Switch), Tanzania (Umoja Switch), and Uganda (Interswitch).

As a result of the four countries' integration, customers of the Association of Savings Banks of East Africa enjoy interoperability across the region's ATMs, a report by Standard Media said. ASBEA members include Kenya Post Office Savings Bank, Post Bank Uganda Ltd., and Tanzania Postal Bank.

“Our objective in tandem with integration of payments infrastructure is financial deepening where our energies are geared to providing more value to customers and improving efficiency of payment systems in East Africa and beyond,” said Kenswitch managing director George Wainaina at an integration launch event.
