Domino's cashless store test underway in Australia

July 12, 2019

Domino's Australia is testing a new "Tap & Take" payment model at five of its stores, which Domino's will take most other forms of payments, aside from cash and blockchain currencies like Bitcoin, according to Australian-based Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd Communications Specialist Tayla Johnstone.

"Customers can use a range of electronic payment options, including credit card, debit card, eftpos and mobile / apple watch, ApplePay, Android Pay and others," she said in an email to Pizza Marketplace. "However, it does not include blockchain currency. This launch is to provide a faster and more convenient experience for customers, while also increasing team member safety."

Domino's Australia and New Zealand CEO Nick Knight said Tap & Take does just what the name promises by allowing customers at the five trial stores to tap their card, phone, smart watch or finger on a keyboard and take their pies and other offerings to enjoy. Since the stores in the trial will keep no cash on the premises nor with its delivery employees, eliminating some of the threat of crimes like robbery and even the violence that often accompanies it.

"With the growth of tap-and-go payment systems and mobile payment technology, use of cash is slowing and we're seeing that right across our network," he said in an email. "We're now heading towards a very real future where the legal tender could be solely electronic, so it's important that we remain digitally agile and continue to meet consumer demands."

The Tap & Take trial began Tuesday in the chain's stores in Newtown, Coffs Harbour and Wauchope in New South Wales, as well as locations in Calamvale and Surfers Paradise South in Queensland. Domino's Pizza Enterprises Limited is the brand's biggest franchisee outside the U.S., with the master franchise rights to the brand and network in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Luxemburg and Denmark, including more than 2,450 stores.
