Diebold employees test RemoteTeller/ATM combo

June 10, 2003

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE: DBD) has installed the first RemoteTeller Self-service (RT-SS) system at the Diebold Employees' Credit Union, so that its employees can help test the concept.

The initial RemoteTeller System, developed by Diebold in 1996, is a teller-assisted walk-up banking unit that utilizes pneumatic tube technology to accept deposit slips, checks, cash, coin and other materials. It operates like a drive-through teller window with a two-way audio and video connection.

According to a news release, the technology increases teller productivity because two or more customers can be served at once. Also, tellers can be relocated to less costly and less accessible areas of the facility. (See related story RemoteTeller beats ATM in personality contest)

The RT-SS, which combines the features of Diebold's original RemoteTeller System with a full-function ATM, was demonstrated last November at BAI's Retail Delivery conference in Atlanta.

It gives consumers the option to choose either a teller-assisted or self-service transaction. If assistance is required during a self-service transaction, the user can summon a teller to assist via the same two-way audio/video connection and pneumatic tube carrier used by the RemoteTeller System.

According to the release, the Diebold Employees' Credit Union RT-SS installation has the longest pneumatic tube run for a RemoteTeller System (RTS), in excess of 300 linear tube feet.

Bartholomew J. Frazzitta, Diebold's vice president and general manager for Physical Security and Retail, said in the release, "Our employee credit union has the benefit of experiencing our newest technology to serve its member base, and Diebold has the opportunity to study the concept and experience the technology from both the consumer and the teller perspective, allowing us to provide a better overall solution."

More than 225 financial institutions have installed more than 1,000 RemoteTeller units at 400 locations across the country, according to the release.
