Just when it starts to seem that ATM industry news is all about bombers, skimmers and trappers and other assorted miscreants, a bona fides stand-up citizen comes along.
An article in today's Times of India said that a man who stopped by an ATM last week to withdraw cash found a bag containing RS2.5 lakh ($4,636.50) and turned it over to the police.
Using video recorded by the CCTV camera in the ATM booth, police were able to trace the money to its proper owner and return the money to him.
"We managed to trace him with the help of the transaction made at the time. We verified his name and address and handed over the cash," said a police inspector who worked on the case. The owner of the cash said he had been unable to remember where he left the money and had searched for it without success.
The man who turned in the bag of money received a cash reward from the police.
