Crime doesn't pay for Fla. ATM thief

February 17, 2002

PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- An unidentified woman used her car to wound a man she said had robbed her at an ATM, according to the Associated Press.

Allen Keith Blattner, 30, was taken to Bay Medical Center with a broken leg after being struck by the woman's car on Dec. 8, police said. Police plan to charge Blattner with robbery upon his release from the hospital.

The woman told police a man claiming he had a gun took her money from the ATM on a street corner. She then drove after him, hitting him with her car and knocking him to the ground. He got up and limped behind a building.

Police surrounded the block but held off searching until a tracking dog could be brought in. However, according to police, it was Blattner's cries of pain as much as the bloodhound's nose that led officers to him.

Blattner told police drugs drove him to crime and asked them to call an ambulance. He didn't have a gun but did have the woman's cash in his pockets. "Tell that lady I'm sorry," he told officers.
