HOUSTON -- Compaq Computer Corp. and Identix Inc. plan to upgrade technology for fingerprint identification. The Compaq Fingerprint Identification Technology will be upgraded with the next generation of biometric security software developed by Identix, which is an international leader in producing biometric verification security and live-scan systems. The enhanced biometrics now allows full integration with smart card devices, handles enrollment of up to eight fingers per user, and operates in both stand-alone and networked systems. The software, BioLogon 2.0, produces a higher level of security with its ability to be used along with other security devices-for example, with a smart card device, in which case the user name, fingerprint and smart card would all be required for access. Compaq plans to roll out first shipments Sept. 20 and will offer free upgrades to customers currently using versions 1.0 and 1.01.
