Co-Op to offer TDES ATM conversion product to members

March 18, 2003

ONTARIO, Calif. -- To address MasterCard's security mandate that all ATMs be upgraded from DES to Triple DES technology, Co-Op Network and eFunds, its transaction processor, will offer a product called 3 DES FIX, developed by Euless, Texas-based Pi Systems, to Co-Op members.

Gene Polito, Co-Op's president of EFT Services, said in a news release, "One of the most beneficial aspects of Pi Systems' 3 DES FIX is its ability to replace the non-encrypting PIN pads in older ATM machines. Their EPP (encryption PIN pad) extends the security and lifespan of our member credit unions' ATM fleets without requiring purchase of additional hardware or software."

In a November interview with ATMmarketplace, Kelly Horton, Pi Systems' vice president of sales and marketing, said that 3 DES FIX could make all STP-, BTP and CTP-based ATMs, including Diebold's 900 series and 10 series up to i and NCR's5000 and 5600 series, capable of running Triple DES. The cost is $3,200, Horton said.

According to a letter written by Joel Lisker, MasterCard's senior vice president of Security and Risk Management, MasterCard has reviewed the PIN handling and processing methods used by 3 DES FIX and "determined that this PIN handling methodology is compliant with our PIN security requirements and Triple DES mandates."

The letter is being distributed by Pi Systems.
