Chase ATM users donate $542k for OK tornado relief

June 27, 2013

In a demonstration of empathy at the ATM, Chase customers nationwide made donations totalling more than $542,000 to help Oklahomans whose lives were thrown into chaos by devastating tornadoes on May 21 and May 28.

More than 14,000 Chase ATMs were programmed to accept $5 donations, of which 108,420 were received between May 24 and June 23, said a report by KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City.

"I want to thank every Chase customer who extended a helping hand to Oklahoma," said Carrie Boyles, SVP, who heads up 30 Chase branches across Oklahoma. "Their generosity will be a tremendous help to our neighbors who need it most."

In a May 21 news release, Chase pledged to donate up to $500,000 to assist Oklahoma residents. The FI said it would match employee donations up to $150,000 and make grants totalling $350,000 to four relief agencies:

  • American Red Cross, $75,000;
  • World Vision, $75,000;
  • Convoy of Hope, $100,000; and
  • United Way of Central Oklahoma, $100,000.

    Chase also waived fees incurred by tornado-affected customers through June 4:

    • overdraft protection transfer, extended overdraft, returned item and insufficient funds fees as well as non-Chase ATM fees on deposit accounts; and
    • late and insufficient funds fees on credit cards, business and consumer loans, including mortgages, home-equity, auto and student loans.
