MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Celo Communications, which provides security products for Internet commerce and communications, has launched an Internet smart card reader. The CeloCom Smart Card Reader is equipped with a PIN pad that attaches to most personal computers and works the leading email clients and Web browsers to enable highly secure online banking, stock trading, encryption and other e-commerce applications. Celo cites the security features of the new reader as its unique feature. PIN codes entered on the PIN pad are never accessible from the PC, where viruses or Trojan horses such as Back Orifice can capture and expose them to unauthorized parties. The CeloCom Smart Card Reader plugs in to CeloCom Web and CeloCom Mail companion software to secure e-mail and Web-based transactions. SCM Microsystems manufactures the CeloCom Smart Card Reader, which Celo Communications designed and patented. The single unit price is $39.
