C-store employee charged in ATM theft

February 10, 2003

HURLEY, Mich. -- A 48-year-old Ironwood woman was arrested Feb. 4 on a charge she stole more than $121,000 from an ATM at a Hurley convenience store where she was employed.

According to the Ironwood (Mich.) Daily Globe, Pamela Jean Calkins, an employee of the Hurley Citgo store, is being held in the Iron County Jail on theft charges.

The thefts from the ATM are alleged to have occurred from the period of June 2002 through January 2003, according to Robert Johnson, chief of security for Krist Oil Company, who contacted police.

According to a criminal complaint authorized by Iron County District Attorney Marty Lipske that was filed on Feb. 3, Calkins admitted stealing from the machine for about a year. She surrendered $4,520 after being questioned about the thefts, police said.

Calkins indicated to investigating officers other employees of the Hurley store did not have knowledge of her thefts, which she said often ranged from $100 to $600.

The count issued against Calkins carries up a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to the Daily Globe.
