During the production of a feature story on smaller processors that serve the independent ATM market, giant First Data Resources purchased USPI, a Milwaukee-based, third-party processor. First Data's President of Debit Services, Kevin Kammer, answered some questions about what the purchase will mean for USPI's ISO customers. ATMmagazine.com: How many ATMs does USPI drive? First Data Resources: USPI drives over 9,000 ATMs. The company drives and supports all popular ATM models and brands with advanced functionality. Offering comprehensive support for settlement, monitoring of ATMs, authorization, network access and card management services. USPI also delivers a full range of implementation, training and support services, including project and account management. ATMmagazine.com: How does the ISO business model at USPI differ from larger processors? FDR: There are several qualities that set us apart from other processors. We offer quicker time to market with certification of new models, advanced feature/functionality, experienced transaction processing and staff, dedicated to the highest quality customer service. ATMmagazine.com: Will USPI's model change now that First Data owns them? FDR: Together, we will continue to offer clients the same processing and support services offered today by USPI. Our focus on understanding the needs and expectations of customers and delivery of quality products and services will not change. ATMmagazine.com: What special needs do ISOs or smaller banks have compared to the big banks and retailers? FDR: We provide our ISO clients with a flexible processing solution. Our ISO clients appreciate our ability to provide quality, reliable ATM terminal driving services including quick terminal installation, and 24/7 on-call support services. ATMmagazine.com: How involved do processors get with ISOs? Down to the marketing level? FDR: First Data is committed to offering our clients the services they need to be competitive in the marketplace. ATMmagazine.com: How does USPI fit into First Data's business? FDR: First Data's debit card operations are part of Debit Services, a division of First Data Resources. As a result of First Data's recent acquisition of USPI, we are capable of offering our clients a comprehensive debit solution. Today, First Data is a leading provider of debit card processing, providing a wide range of account management, access and processing services to over 450 debit card issuers nationwide. Since 1993, First Data has been building an infrastructure to support the needs of the debit card marketplace.
