BNZ patents 'liquid encryption number' for bank cards

June 22, 2010

The New Zealand Herald reports that Bank of New Zealand has received a patent on an invention created by one of its employees: a "liquid encryption number" that dynamically rewrites a card's magstripe data after each usage. The technology reportedly reduces skimming fraud by half.

The BNZ tells the Herald that it hopes to sell the technology internationally.
