Bitcoin wallet provider Coinbase lands $75M in funding from FIs

The cash infusion is the largest ever for a bitcoin company, Coinbase said.

Bitcoin wallet and exchange startup Coinbase announced on Tuesday that it has raised $75 million in Series C financing — to date, the largest funding round for a bitcoin company, and the first to include investment by major financial institutions.

According to the Coinbase blog, participants include: The New York Stock Exchange; a subsidiary of USAA; and multinational bank BBVA. Additionally, former Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit and former Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer made personal investments.

The funds infusion will give the company "solid growth capital to continue driving mainstream, global adoption of bitcoin," the blog said.

So far, investors have put in a total of $106 million in capitol into Coinbase, the  blog said.
