Bitcoin Depot will pay Maine $1.9 million to compensate fraud victims. It made a settlement with the state where it agreed to pay the amount without admitting ot any wrongdoing or violation of laws, according to a report by ABC News.
This amount is for victims who were convinced by scammers to deposit cash into Bitcoin Depot ATMs. Scammers are increasingly using bitcoin ATMs due to the irreversible nature of cryptocurrency transactions. In 2025, the FBI reportedthat scammers had stolen more than $333 million in the U.S. with this technique.
Maine has also enacted stricter laws against bitcoin ATMs, setting a daily transaction cap of $1,000 and a fee cap of $5 or 3%. It also requires bitcoin ATM operators to provide full refunds to scam victims who meet certain reporting criteria.
As of the time of the writing of this story, Bitcoin Depot has not responded to a request for a comment from ATM Marketplace.
