The ATM Industry Association has announced the publication of "Best Practices for Cardless Transactions at the ATM." The manual defines and analyzes cardless transactions and offers international case studies of successful cardless ATM programs.
According to a news release from ATMIA, the best practices document outlines how channel strategies are developing to take advantage of the convergence between consumer-owned devices and ATMs. "We believe strongly in the future of cardless as a convenient new form of transaction at the ATM," said ATMIA CEO Mike Lee.
International payments consultant Barry Forbes provides the manual's overview of the technical, operational, regulatory and marketing issues associated with the new technology. Its security implications are addressed by Douglas Russell, director of DFR Risk Management and an approved ATMIA consultant.
"Major manufacturers have already announced technology that integrates mobile devices with ATM functionality, and several banks in several countries have released proprietary cardless transaction services," Forbes wrote in the manual. "Whether it is mobile-based pre-staging of transactions (where the mobile device replaces the ATM screen and keyboard) or proxy-based transaction completion (where mobile numbers, one-time-pins or voucher numbers are entered in place of card swiping), or the use of newer QR code or NFC technology, Cardless@ATM appears to be trending."
"Best Practices for Cardless Transactions at the ATM" is available to ATMIA members and can be downloaded from the ATMIA website. The association news release said the new manual should be read in conjunction with previously published works, "Integrated Payments and Customer Experience," and "Best Practices for Preventing Mobile Fraud."
