Malaysia's Bank Simpanan Nasional, in partnership with Cisco, is deploying virtual teller machines to enable virtual, real-time video engagement between customers and tellers in any of the bank's 31 branches, according to a press release.

The service is built on the Cisco Business Edition 7000 unified communications platform, which includes voice over Internet protocol; video through Telepresence with Cisco DX 650; and Cisco Jabber for chat functionality and presence.

The scalable, open and interoperable technologies are hosted on the Cisco Unified Computing System foundation, the release said.

Each BSN branch will have three VTMs for a total of 93 machines. These will be supported by 450 virtual teller agents, who will be able to perform up to 80 percent of typical teller window transactions.

BSN VTMs feature encrypted electronic signature, thumb print verification, and card identification to ensure the security of customer accounts and data. In total, BSN is paying approximately 30 million ringgit ($7 million) on the system, the release said.

"The VTM balances the workload between branches, enabling customers in busy branches to perform transactions assisted by tellers in less busy branches nationwide," said BSN Chief Executive Datuk Adinan Maning. "Customers can now enjoy counter transactions without geographical limitations and experience more comfortable and personalized professional financial services.

Maning said that In the near future, the VTMs will offer additional services that include account opening and debit cards, customer information management and bill payment. He said that BSN might also extend banking hours with the placement of VTMs at public locations.
