Bank One first to connect ATMs, back-office check image processing system

December 15, 2002

DAYTON, Ohio --  Bank One Corporation (NYSE: ONE) is rolling out 10 of NCR Corporation's (NYSE: NCR) Personas ATMs equipped with check-imaging modules and bunch note acceptors, technology that eliminates the deposit envelope and directly accepts customers' checks and cash.

According to a news release, the technology is being piloted in select locations in Indiana and Kentucky. Bank One expects to evaluate the performance of the ATMs after 90 days.

Bank One is also applying NCR's ImageMark distributed capture system to process ATM check images in the back office, which will make it the first North American financial institution to connect its ATMs to a back-office check image processing system.

Andrew Orent, vice president of self-service for NCR's Financial Solutions division, said in the release that the combination of Personas ATMs and ImageMark will provide "an integrated end-to-end solution that will rewrite the rulebook of ATM deposit processing."

Dean Kontul, Bank One's senior vice president and national ATM manager, said in the release, "NCR's technology makes it easier and more attractive to use our ATMs to make deposits. While allowing us to improve service to our customers, we will also have an opportunity to reduce our deposit-processing and back-office costs."

Bank One's advanced deposit ATMs are driven by the Star network, a subsidiary of Concord EFS, Inc.
