Australian punters bet with smart cards

February 26, 2002

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- New South Wales punters will soon be able to place bets using a smart card at terminals similar to ATMs, reports the AAP newswire.

Warren Wilson, managing director designate of the NSW Totalisator Agency Board, outlined the smart card plan, along with other planned technological advancements, at a Country Racing Australia Conference in the rural city of Wagga Wagga.

He said TAB Ltd has commissioned several companies to work on prototypes, including self-service terminals and smart card use via home telephones in conjunction with pay TV.

Other plans include computer forecasts of likely race outcomes of races, taking into account checks in running in earlier races, track bias and other factors. "Initially computer forecasts will be shown on Sky Channel's Sunday Review program but later should be available for public use," he said.
