SYDNEY, Australia -- New South Wales police seized a skimming device attached to an ATM in inner-city Sydney following several incidents of fraud using the devices in recent weeks. It was the first capture of a skimming device in Australia, according to ZDnet Australia.
Skimming is becoming a popular way for defrauders to make money ripping off ATM users; custom-made gadgetry is used to steal card information and personal identification numbers (PIN). The skimmer found by police consisted of a pin-hole camera and a card reader.
A woman using the ATM alerted police to the skimmer.
