ATMs enter Japanese workplace

February 26, 2002

Fuji Bank hopes to install ATMs at the offices of major corporations, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The new advanced ATMs will process expense vouchers and perform other specialized functions, in addition to providing standard ATM services on a 24-hour basis.

The bank expects to install several at such companies as Epson Hanbai Co. and Texas Instruments Japan Ltd. as early as June.

Japanese banks are developing more versatile ATMs capable of handling varied services at low cost. The Fuji Bank device incorporates a personal computer that can, for example, book corporate-run resort accommodations. Employees enter company identification numbers and personal codes to arrange details.

Companies installing Fuji ATMs will pay a monthly fee of 250,000 yen ($2,119). The bank plans to incorporate an English-language instruction option and market the ATMs to foreign companies.
