ATMIA to address ISO audit issue at Feb. conference

January 27, 2002

LONDON -- In response to concerns voiced within the U.S. ATM industry about the request by VISA International for an audit of ISOs and independent contractors, the ATM Industry Association has organized a meeting on the matter at its upcoming conference, "ATMs Hit the Big Screen", Feb. 19-22 at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, Fla.

The meeting will take place at 10.45 am Thursday, Feb. 21.

During the meeting, VISA USA's Director of Risk Policy, Martin Elliott, will address the audience on the topic of "Overview of the ISO Registration Process and the Enhanced ISO/Service Provider Risk Standards."The presentation will focus on the responsibility of VISA members to properly manage and control agent relationships to protect the integrity of the VISA payment system, particularly in the area of PIN security.

After Elliott's 30-minute presentation, there will be a question and answer panel session with Sandra Hartfield, senior executive vice president of Palm Desert National Bank, representing the viewpoint of cash providers; and Neil Johnson, president of International Merchant Services, representing the ISO viewpoint.

The ATM Industry Association, which represents ATM manufacturers, deployers, network processors and service-providers in the U.S., Canada, UK, Europe and other regions including Australasia, has fielded concerns from its members about the timing and costs of the audit and registration process, said ATMIA International Director Mike Lee.

"Resources are strained to keep the ATM industry buoyant, and the audit may further stretch resources, especially for the many smaller companies that make up the independent sector, lowering overall productivity," Lee said. "The deadline and time-frame could also be too short for proper planning, preparation and project management to take place. The purpose of the meeting is to understand the full context of the audit and to listen to questions from the broader industry in a constructive and balanced forum."

At the same conference, ATMIA is presenting for the first time a workshop for retail operators and owners of ATMs, called "Merchant ATMs: Best Practice for Optimal Value." The workshop will address the implications of the VISA stipulations and a wide range of other topics.

The first-ever pre-conference workshop, a two-and-half hour program, is designed to help merchants run their ATM operations more efficiently. A roster of experts, including Brian Archer, executive vice president of Cardtronics, and Bruce Kreeger, president/CEO of ATM Center, will give advice to merchants on operating an ATM program in any off-premise location.

President of Networld Alliance, Tom Harper, will provide an overview of resources available on ATMmarketplace to storeowners and retailers who own or operate ATMs. Contact Danadana@trademediagroup.comor register online.
