ATMIA hosting its 1st show Down Under

April 14, 2002

SYDNEY -- Within weeks of the launch of ATMIA Australasia, its board has grown to nine members, according to ATMIA International Director Mike Lee: Credit Union Services Corporation Australia; Cashcard Australia; Extracash Electronic Banking Solutions, which has direct representation on both the sub committee for the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Advisory Council of the Australian Payments Clearing Association; NCR Asia; De La Rue Cash Systems; Diebold Asia; Triton; and Carreker Corporation.

Non-board ATMIA Australasia members include Hyosung Computer, based in Korea.

"Australia being a hot country, I suppose ATMIA should not have been surprised by this particularly warm reception we've received 'down under,'" Lee said.

The ATM industry itself is heating up in this region, Lee said. A few notable examples:

  • St.George's Bank is to add 100 new ATMs and replace 250 existing machines, giving them bold new signage and making them more accessible for disabled customers. Over the past two years, the bank has expanded its ATM network by almost 20 percent.
  • Westpac Bank is rolling out new talking ATMs to offer improved self-service banking facilities to visually-impaired customers. The NT-based "Access Friendly" ATMs offer voice assisted cash withdrawal and balance inquiry capability, which is easily navigated using the numeric keypad. The new ATMs will initially be deployed in nine locations, with additional sites planned for roll out in late 2002.
  • National Australia Bank recently installed its first talking ATM on a six-month pilot trial. The pilot will use audio or voice-enabled technology to enable customers who are blind, vision impaired or elderly to perform basic ATM transactions. From January 2003, all newly purchased ATMs fro the bank will be voice enabled.
  • Independent ATM deployment in Australia is taking off with deployers like EBS, Extracash, Direct Cash and Travelex taking the convenience ATM to the off-premise market.
  • ATM transaction volumes are increasing in the region. Tim Tyler, chairman of Peppers and Rogers Group (Asia Pacific), has stated that every transaction made through branches resulted in three transactions through ATMs.

For a firsthand look at this hot ATM market, Lee encourages interested parties to join ATMIA as it hosts its first ATM trade show on Australian soil May 27-29 in Sydney. Called "Pacific ATMs," the event takes place in the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Participants at "Pacific ATMs" include: Westpac Banking Corporation, NCR, Cashcard Australia, Triton, Electronic Banking Solutions, Euronet Worldwide, Chubb Protective Services Australia, Extracash, Hyosung Computer, Carreker Corporation and Mosaic Software, among others.

"Pacific ATMs" will feature leading presentations on ATM channel management, enhancing customer interactions on ATMs, the role of ATMs in relation to remote banking, cash replenishment and security, secure financial transactions on ATMs, critical success factors for independent ATM deployment in Australasia, ATM advertising, merchant ATM operators, a surcharging and interchange panel discussion chaired by Cashcard Australia and case studies from Korea, Australia, America and Europe.

"Another good reason to be there," Lee said, "is the first CeBIT Australia is taking place in the same week at the same venue, so you can gain maximum benefit from two key events together."
