ATMIA hosting Australian conference in May

SYDNEY - "Pacific ATMs 02," the ATM Industry Association's second conference and exhibition on Australian soil, will take place in Sydney's harbor city May 5-6.

Participants at the eventwill include leading companies and industry bodies such as Visa International, the Global ATM Security Alliance, Cashcard Australia, the Australian Bankers Association, ATM Solutions Australasia, Westpac Bank, Bank of Queensland, NCR, Nautilus Hyosung, Wincor Nixdorf, Pulse EFT Association, Triton, CreditLink Services and Prepaid Direct. 

New components for the second event include an ATM security forum; an "ATMs in Asia" session featuring speakers from China and Korea; technology user groups; as well as a special session on the impact of surcharging on the United States ATM market, a topic requested by board members of ATMIA Australasia as a result of the imminent introduction of direct charging in Australia. 

The keynote address on surcharging will be delivered by Cindy Ballard, executive vice president of the Pulse EFT Association, which was very involved in the arbitration case which led to the ability to levy surcharges in the U.S. Ballard, who has been with Pulse for 20 years, has managed several research projects since the arbitration to analyze consumers' reactions and attitudes toward the fees.

Other topics include: the business plan for smart cards and how they will affect the industry; key drivers of multifunctional, multi-service ATMs in the Korean and east Asian markets; an update on Global ATM Security Alliance projects, including a global ATM Crime Information System and a Continuous Cyber Security Process; a fraud update for the Australian market; and a panel discussion on biometrics.
