The award was announced at the ATMIA Africa conference and expo currently taking place at the Lagoon Beach Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa.
"To mark the 10th anniversary of our first ATMs in Africa conference, the association wanted to create a special award for an industry leader who had most changed the ATM landscape in this region," said ATMIA CEO Mike Lee. "Steven richly deserves this recognition for breaking the mold and launching the independent convenient ATM sector here, an achievement which spawned a whole new range of ATM services placed in retail locations close to where people work and shop."
In 1999, Kark cofounded ATM Solutions, which today is the largest IAD in the region with a network of more than 5,000 ATMs across southern Africa. Additionally, Kark cofounded DrawCard in 2004, and formed EFTPOS in 2005. Together, the entities form Paycorp Holdings, a diversified payments service provider. Kark also was a founding member of the Board of the ATMIA Africa chapter.
The ATMIA release said that Kark's approach to delivering payments solutions "has always been driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and an ongoing culture of innovation, seeing him win many accolades along the way."
"It's an honor to be recognized for the work done over the past 15 years," Kark said upon accepting the award. "As with all successful businesses, it takes more than just one individual, and Paycorp Holdings wouldn't be what it is today without a team of dedicated professionals who together with innovative thinking and clever technology have evolved an entrepreneur's dream into an end-to-payments organization with ambitions to be the leading payments provider in emerging markets globally."
The ATM Industry Association, founded in 1997, is a global non-profit trade association with over 10,500 members in 65 countries. The membership base covers the full range of this worldwide industry comprising over 2.2 million installed ATMs.
