Police in at least three Hartford, Connecticut towns are investigating both attempted theft and smash-and-grab theft of convenience store ATM machines, according to a report from the Hartford Courier.

Thieves struck closed stores in East Hartford, Windsor Locks and West Hartford before dawn on Friday, but police are still working to determine if the three incidents are somehow connected.

In East Hartford, thieves yanked an ATM from the Ultra Fuel Quick Mart. Police arrived on the scene, but the two men had escaped. The police entered the store and discovered the thieves had pried open the outside door and ransacked the store. Two masked thieves had entered the business and one quickly threw a strap around the ATM and then yanked it out of the store, dragging and smashing store displays in the process.

In Windsor Locks, a red pickup crashed into a store in what appears to be a failed attempt to steal the store's ATM.

Police received multiple 911 calls about the truck about 3 a.m, Witnesses reported that it was "smashing" into the Valero gas station convenience store and thieves were breaking in. When officers arrived, the thieves were gone. Police saw that the door had been ripped off its hinges and the building was damaged.

The police continue to look for clues in in the West Hartford attempted theft.
