In parts of the world where ATM gas attacks have become a common occurrence, authorities have long worried that an explosion set off by thieves could result in serious injury or death to bystanders.
Now the perpetrator of an ATM is in the hospital himself, fighting for his life in the wake of an ATM explosion gone terribly wrong.
According to a report in The Mirror, the 51-year-old thief and his 48-year-old accomplice were preparing to blow up an ATM in the Scottish town of Clydebank when their explosives detonated prematurely.
CCTV footage shows the older man engulfed in a ball of flame as he was blown back several feet by the blast. The accomplice, who was uninjured in the blast, tried briefly to rouse the seriously injured man before running away from the scene.
The report said that the injured man was in critical condition with serious burns to his face and a head injury caused by flying debris from the ATM. His accomplice has been found and arrested, the report said.
