An ATM was the target of an attempted robbery Friday morning at BBVA Bank on Highway 6 and University Boulevard in Sugarland, Texas.
The robbery led to a chase between the police and a suspected thief, according to a report on ABC 13 television.
Pulling the ATM from its anchoring in the bank's drive thru, the thieves badly damaged the machine.
Officers chased a vehicle believed to be involved in the attempted ATM smash-and-grab, but during the high-speed chase, wads of cash flew out of the ATM and scattered across University Boulevard, causing police to lose sight of the vehicle during the pursuit.
University Boulevard in both directions was closed in the area while authorities worked to recover the cash.
Police moved the search to a nearby bayou and called for K9 units to assist.
