The ATM Security Association has announced the release of a new white paper on the topic of ATM cash cassette security.
According to an ASA press release, the paper was developed by a cassette security working group whose participants include ATM manufacturers, financial institutions, cash cassette manufacturers and providers of intelligent banknote neutralization systems.
The paper outlines the multifaceted environment of cash cassette security and lists key considerations for a viable risk assessment. The authors analyze forms of unauthorized cash, which can range from accidental exposures to criminal attacks, and review security aspects around ATM cash holdings. These can include the physical construction of the cassette, processes of cash replenishment and transport, and the tracking and neutralization of cash.
The diversity of cash cassette structures and service environments coupled with the variety of threats and sources makes cooperative work essential to stopping unauthorized cash access, according to Nick Aveyard, leader of the cassette security working group and a business development executive with Spinnaker, a supplier of intelligent cash protection systems.
"Throughout their operational life cycle, cash cassettes can be attacked in multiple ways, be it through gross external attack, internal pilferage or accidental exposure," he said in the release. "An evaluation of potential risks hence required us to look on the holistic use of cash cassettes and the specifics of their operational exposure in any given business model."
In the release, the ATM Security Association said that its next white paper will aim to foster awareness of threats and defenses in order to achieve greater consistency and effectiveness at a global level in the concerted fight against the continuously evolving nature of organized crime.

The ATM Security Association was formed to provide a collection and distribution point for information about recognized and potential attack scenarios on ATMs. Its goal is to work with specific industry groups to rapidly develop and implement counter-measures to ATM threats at a global level.
