The explosive growth of the ATM industry seems to have leveled off, if 1998 U.S. sales figures are any indication. According to Faulkner & Gray, total ATM sales dropped 3 percent, from 49,730 in 1997 to 48,143 in 1998.
All of the major manufacturers, including Diebold, NCR, Triton and Tidel, reported a slowdown in sales. While NCR sales increased about 10 percent, from 13,864 in 1997 to 15,292 in 1998, that was significantly less than the 45 percent growth the company reported from 1996 to 1997.
Triton sales increased about 15 percent from 1997 to 1998, compared to 39 percent a year earlier. Tidel sales grew 33 percent last year, down from 70 percent a year earlier.
Diebold shipped an estimated 14,000 ATMs in the U.S. in 1998, down from 18,300 shipped in 1997.
