Police in Honolulu are warning of an ATM check fraud that is gaining momentum in the area. In the incidents, a scammer approaches someone and asks them to deposit a fraudulent check at an ATM in exchange for cash, according to a report by Star Advertiser.
The scammer will claim to have an emergency and offer someone cash in exchange for helping them. In many cases, the scammer will give the victim $100 in cash in exchange for depositing a $500 check. The victim will then withdraw the $500 from the ATM and give to the scammer. By the next day, the check bounces and the victim is out $400.
Police are reminding the public not to do financial transactions from strangers, especially depositing checks.
