ATM America, Inc. announces smooth start to Triple DES Transition

December 5, 2002

ATM America, Inc. (ATMA) announces that it has started using Triple DES (3DES) encryption on all new Triton ATM installations and has begun the process of identifying for conversion all current 3DES capable Triton ATMs already in the field. "So far so good" was the general consensus at ATMA as the transition has been eased by the level of support offered by Triton and ATMA's transaction processor Core Data. "We had everything ready to go and decided that there was no reason to wait any longer. Core Data was ready, Triton was ready, and we were ready" stated ATMA's Director of Technology, Donald Clarke. "The first phase, implementation on any new installs, has been fairly easy. For the second phase, we will focus on the conversion of those machines in the field that have 3DES capable software and hardware already. Finally, in the third phase we will start contacting the owners of non-compliant ATMs and reviewing their options with them. The final phase is expected to take much longer than the first two and we do not want to wait until the last minute."

According to network regulations the closest deadline for full 3DES compliance is April 1, 2005. But according to ATMA CEO and owner, Al Kelley, "We will be finished in our transition to Triple DES long before then. It just doesn't make sense to wait around for the networks to finalize their deadlines or hope for some kind of extension. The technology is ready and we are moving forward now to insure that if any problems do come up, we will have plenty of time to give them our full attention."
