NEWPORT-ON-TAY, Scotland - Similar to a program announced with Leicestershire, England's police department last month, police in Wiltshire, England, are using ATMs to spread the word about excessive alcohol during the 2006 World Cup games.
The operation with ATM:ad, titled OP XS, will run across 21 cash machines on High streets, shopping malls, supermarkets, railway stations and petrol stations across Wiltshire from June 9 to July 6, according to a news release.
"The message is about moderation, about the problems that arise from excess and how in some cases those problems prove fatal," Wiltshire's assistant chief constable, Peter Vaughan, said. "OP XS is not a publicity stunt. And it is not a 24-hour wonder. We will be taking firm action against anyone who drinks to excess and commits crime - tonight, tomorrow and the days, weeks and months thereafter."
