With ATM sales flattening in the U.S., the biggest ATM manufacturers are looking north to Canada to boost their business. Triton is an early market leader.
July 1, 1999
In the 1960s, it was the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Kinks who led what was known as "The British Invasion" on the United States. In 1999, U.S. companies are leading an invasion of their own -- this time in Canada. Since the ABM (automated bank machine) surcharge ban was lifted by our neighbors to the north in 1997, a migration of sorts has taken place -- but with cash dispensers as the import instead of guitars. Long Beach, Miss.-based Triton Systems is one of the early leaders in the chase for dominance of this relatively new market. In May, the company announced that its ATM shipments for 1998 surpassed 10,000 units for the first time, representing a 35 percent increase over the previous year. Its expansion into Canada was given partial credit for the leap. Other manufacturers in the race to claim Canada, according to a May report by Bank Network News, are NCR, Diebold and Tidel. According to Bank Network News, NCR holds a slight lead in Canadian sales of ATMs with 1,557 sold in 1998. Triton reportedly sold 1,330. Triton's figures, however, put the number over 1,500 in its first full year of operations in Canada, a pretty substantial leap from the five units deployed in Canada in 1997. According to figures obtained from The Nilson Report in Oxnard, Calif., Triton is the number one manufacturer of cash dispensers in Canada. Another way in which Triton burst onto the Canadian scene last year was through its Calypso Canada Ltd. subsidiary. Calypso, an ATM transaction processor that is affiliated with Sun Life Trust Company, is a member of the Toronto-based Interac Association, the country's national EFT network. Triton President Ernest Burdette believes having its own Canadian processing company puts Triton at a distinct advantage over competitors. Brian Kett, director of Canadian marketing for Triton, said the key benefit of Calypso Canada is self reliance. "We wanted to ensure that our dial-up equipment in Canada had an avenue to get good reliable switch services," Kett said. "Calyspo Canada provides that avenue. As functionality of ATMs changes over next few years -- with vending products, advertising screens and other enhancements coming down the pike -- we wanted to make sure that service is available." With the relative newness of the Canadian market, expect more U.S. companies to get into the act. Of course, they are competing not only with each other, but with Canadian companies as well. Mark McDade, vice president of sales and operation for ABM Direct, believes that of the hundred or so companies selling and maintaining cash machines in Canada, only a few will ultimately survive -- but it's too early to tell who they will be. "I still think there's a lot of market out there," he said.
